Shizukuishi

T5B: 1) I got REAL cheese! 2) I got to make a peanut senbei. Mmmm! 3) I met my host family and they spoke fairly little English, but we got on grand! In fact, they invited me for New Year's! 4) I get to sleep in a REAL bed! 5) Dinner was amazing!

basal temp: 36.54

Morning:
- I woke up early, got ready quickly, off to the train
- I returned my books to Aiina
- was FORTY minutes early to the train, lol
- everthing was in Japanese....
- I met Mayu (teenage girl from my host family)
- we went to Koiwai Farm

Notes: Oh man - here I thought since it was for foreigners that it would be in English, nope.

Afternoon:
- bought cheese, bought ice cream (it was decent)
- Mayu wanted to ride a horse, I took the pictures :)
- went to an artisan place
- ate lunch (SOO MUCH FOOD - luckily they said it was ok not to finish, sheesh - mottainai! ~what a waste!)
- made a peanut senbei, bought cheese senbei (yes I miss cheese, ok?)
- walked around and watched the craftsmen work
- had the "talk" portion all in Japanese :/

Notes: You know, I specifically asked Hashimoto-sensei, "Will the talk be in English?" He said, "I should expect so!" Nope. And most of the other foreigners were Chinese students who had learned Japanese already. Then there was an Austrian who was as lost as me and an American. One other American was born in Japan, grew up in the states and moved back (speaks Japanese fluently). I wish I could have understood what was going on all day. All the explanations, all the information... *sigh* It's the reason I went! Oh well. :/ It was still lovely. Just felt really long, you know?

Evening:
- we were picked up my Mayu's father (Mastumoto-san)
- Mayu's mother welcomed me with a hug - THAT was something I really needed and appreciated
- they had me put my stuff in my room
- the dog, Candy, took to me IMMEDIATELY
- dinner (fabulous!)
- some conversation
- we watched The King's Speech on tv :) So I got to hear English! :D

Notes: So, for dinner: hot pot, cabbage salad, sashimi (raw fish - salmon) and avocado salad with a wasabi vinaigrette, brined cukes and daikon, pork ribs (cooked in miso), mugicha (I turned down their offer of wine) - mugicha is wheat tea, the gave me a glass of oolong tea as well... what else? SOO much food. After I finished all that (and it was a TON of food), she put rice and cheese in the hot pot tomato base - SOOO good, but I couldn't manage more than a couple bites. That made me sad because it was my favorite part. They offered me dessert but I had absolutely no room for it. I hope I didn't hurt their feelings by turning it down. The shashimi and avocado salad took me by surprise. It looked like a boiled and skinned tomato and avocado salad. Nope! Raw fish! It was really good though. :) My love to you all! XOXO, A

Sunrise is much later now and sunset is before 1630!

I asked for lots of chocolate since you can't buy chocolate ice cream anywhere and I just wanted chocolate ice cream!
