A high-five day

Today was pretty good. I made it to school ok, the morning was good (had plenty of time to get ready and out the door), the bus ran quickly and I was able to make it on time to the morning meeting. :) Then my classes came.

My first class was a bit of trial. They tried to talk over me almost the whole class. It was fairly discouraging for me. I really wanted to have fun with them!

My second class went well. I was only given a small amount of time so I played Scattergories with the class. I have a chance to exercise their vocabulary. I get a chance to help with their spelling. AND typically they really want to win and look up words in the dictionary. If they remember their new words, all the better! Today one of the kids wrote "mammals" (well he had written it phonetically) and I was very impressed. The entire class was silent as I explained what a mammal was. It was exciting for me to have this class's attention. (This is the class in which I bombed in front of the BOE because my lesson was too hard. I was unaware of how low their English level was. -- However, playing Scattergories actually gave me a really good idea of range for their level. I've played this game with most of the other third grade classes and my second graders. And actually my second graders, my class of mostly English-haters, did the best! Hmm!)

My third class made my week! As I walked in, a group of girls outside the class made disappointed noises that I wasn't going to THEIR class. And the girls in the front of the room said loudly, "YES!" and started high-fiving one another. I wanted to cry with joy. That class LOVES me. They were with me almost every second. Only once did they get out of hand but Hashimoto-sensei told them to hush and listen to me, and they did! Their English level (after going through their worksheets) is REALLY good. They are a credit to Hashimoto-sensei for sure! There are a couple guys who sit on the sides of the room and the back who really get energetic about my lessons - I think they bother Hashimoto-sensei with their over-the-top enthusiasm, but I love it! They just really filled my heart and I am SO grateful for that! -- This is the story from which I got my title. :)

I got home a while ago. I made some dinner and ate and talked a little to a friend. I can't wait until Abbey and Tara come! I was trying to plan what we would do and what we could make (and eat) and the other surrounding cities we could visit... it greatly helped lift my spirits. :) Even though I don't have the blessings I want most, I am overwhelmingly blessed and thankful for that! Hope you all had a great day as well! XOXO, A

Funny moments:

(Warning adultish words!) At lunch time Kanamori-sensei came by my desk and asked me if I liked whores. That is, she said, "Do you like whores?" I slowly looked up at her and cocked my head back. "Do I like what?" "Whores. H-O-R-C." Then I was REALLY confused. And the first thing I thought was, "Orcs? Why would she ask me if I like Orcs? Is it possible that she knows what they are!? Seems more farfetched than whores!" Then it hit me - horses!! I suddenly yelled, "Oh! Horse! Horses?" "Yes, yes! They are having a horse celebration Saturday, June 2nd. Please go!" I looked at her and I looked at the calendar and said, "I will try to go. (I didn't touch the incorrect date nor the fact that it was yesterday.)" LOL At the end of lunch she came back and said she got the weekends mixed up and it's this Saturday so I think I will check it out! She told me it was worth seeing. As exciting-sounding as a whore celebration, maybe not. ;) But infinitely more interesting and fun for me!

P.S. Here are two pictures of the trophies my students have won. (I'm playing the odds on that one - I teach all but 110 of the 708 students and I will get those other 110 in October) so ya! My students rock!
